Fire Suppression Advice & Updates

Housing Digital Innovation Awards Finalists

The Housing Digital Innovation Awards recognise and celebrate the wealth of innovation that has taken place within housing in the previous year. We are pleased to announce that we have been shortlisted for the Best Fire Safety award category.

Background to the iMist system

The use of water mist as a method of fire suppression in domestic and residential settings is a relatively new concept, meaning it constantly calls for new approaches and engineering solutions. Achieving the correct balance between droplet size and water flow is critical to system performance.

Unlike traditional sprinkler systems, the water droplets discharged by an iMist system attack all sides of the fire triangle. They are effective because they are up to 1,000 times smaller than average sprinkler droplets, allowing the same volume of water to cover up to one million times the surface area. This efficiency enables the system to use up to 80% less water.

Why have we been shortlisted for the Housing Digital Innovation Awards Best Fire Safety category?

Our in-house research and development team has developed a new nozzle that has proven effective in testing, demonstrating reliable activation times and successful fire suppression, helping the system meet BS 8458 requirements.

The mist element works to suppress airborne gas particles that could pose a threat to life. These capabilities are combined with:

  • The compact design of the pump
  • Flexible pipework, making retrofitting easier
  • Operation from the mains water supply — no tank required

The nozzle is manufactured using advanced AutoCAD design and five-axis CNC technology, enabling precise production and ensuring durability under demanding metal-on-metal conditions to prevent leaks.

We have also developed our own flow switch to detect water movement. It is designed to adapt to fluctuations in water flow and pressure, allowing for normal variations from the water supply without triggering false activations.

Why is it important to keep innovating?

Working in the fire safety sector carries a responsibility to protect both property and lives. While traditional sprinkler systems have been effective, emerging technologies allow us to develop solutions that not only suppress fires but also save lives, protect property, and conserve water.

This level of innovation enables more buildings, belongings, and people to be protected while using minimal water with maximum impact.

Continual innovation in design, engineering, and sustainability will lead to greater protection, more cost-effective solutions, and a reduced carbon footprint.
